Abstract: We oppose the draft proposal of a Whole Life Custody (Scotland) Bill by Scottish Conservative MSP and party Justice Spokesperson Liam Kerr. In our assessment, it is as regressive and problematic in principle as it would prove to be in practice. This Open Letter acts as a written submission to the Member's Consultation on this proposed Bill.2019-08-26T00:00:00ZLet prisoners vote, just like other citizensGraham, Hannahhttp://hdl.handle.net/1893/327782021-06-25T00:14:47Z2019-09-13T00:00:00ZTitle: Let prisoners vote, just like other citizens

Abstract: Prisoner voting is on the agenda again at Holyrood with the Scottish Elections (Franchise and Representation) Bill. A key policy aim of this Government Bill is to enfranchise some convicted prisoners aged 16 and older to be eligible to vote in Scottish Parliament and local government elections in order to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights, overturning a longstanding blanket ban on prisoner voting. As a criminologist and fellow citizen, I support this Bill, while arguing that it should be amended to be braver and go further in enfranchising more prisoners than initially proposed. Intransigence and populist politicisation of this human rights issue have meant we lag behind many European counterparts, our blanket ban putting us with Russia, Bulgaria and Hungary. Whereas Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland have no electoral ban on prisoner voting – a progressive Nordic and Celtic arc of nations Scotland should join, now the power to enfranchise is devolved to Holyrood.2019-09-13T00:00:00ZThe Unequal Impact of Covid-19 on black, asian, minority ethnic and refugee communitiesMcKee, KimPearce, AnnaLeahy, Sharonhttp://hdl.handle.net/1893/319252021-04-22T16:04:29Z2020-05-06T00:00:00ZTitle: The Unequal Impact of Covid-19 on black, asian, minority ethnic and refugee communities
