| Abstract: | Objetivo: Analizar las percepciones de adolescentes escolares de Pucallpa sobre el tabaco tradicional «mapacho» (Nicotiana rustica), a partir de los hallazgos emergentes de un estudio cualitativo sobre cigarrillos industriales. Materiales y métodos: Investigación cualitativa realizada entre junio de 2023 y mayo de 2024 en dos instituciones educativas públicas de Pucallpa, región amazónica del Perú. La muestra consistió en 38 adolescentes de 12 a 17 años, distribuidos en cuatro grupos focales segmentados por sexo y edad. Los datos se procesaron mediante análisis temático reflexivo con apoyo del software NVivo 14. Resultados: Se identificaron dos categorías principales relacionadas con la percepción del consumo de mapacho: su uso cultural y protector, y su nocividad. Los participantes vincularon el producto con prácticas tradicionales, protección espiritual y actividades como la pesca y el trabajo rural. Si bien reconocieron su potencial daño a la salud, una parte considerable lo percibió como menos nocivo que el tabaco industrial debido a su origen «natural» y artesanal; en cambio, otros lo consideraron más perjudicial por su intensidad sensorial. Conclusiones: El mapacho posee un rol central y ambivalente en las representaciones de los adolescentes amazónicos, vinculando significados culturales protectores con riesgos sanitarios subestimados. Resulta necesario que las estrategias preventivas regionales incorporen enfoques interculturales liderados por la enfermería, orientados a esclarecer las creencias sobre la supuesta inocuidad de los productos tradicionales. |
